journal 15: One small Movement, Big Miracles

April 25

Session 2 already started on this Monday along with the tragic news of the ferry Sewol. But I have not written any journal this week. Just like all the other people, I have been much stunned at the disaster and  have not concentrated on my work. With deep sorrow and anger as well, I have been talking about it with my classmates in daytime and just watching  TV news until late at night. Now giving my condolences to the victims and their families, .... I really hope a tragic accident like this will not happen again and we adult will learn and innovate many things from this disaster.

journal 12: Freedom Writers

Friday April 11

Denis had us bring tears to our eyes in his class from the first period. It was because he showed the impressive film " Freedom Writers" produced in 2007 starring Hilary Swank, Scott Glenn, Imelda Staunton and Patrick Dempsey. The film is based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary by teacher Erin Gruwell who wrote the story based on Woodrow Wilson Classical High School in EastsideLong BeachCalifornia.

It was so touching that almost all the classmates shed tears and several times had to wipe our eyes and nose with some tissues . At first, I was much stunned at finding out that the boys and girls in the region spent their daily lives in such a danger. Second I was deeply moved at  Erin's commitment.
This movie seems to teach that the first thing in education is to have a true relationship between the teacher and the students. Thank you for showing this movie, Denis!

journal 11: Break a Leg!

Wednesday April 9th

Smiling brightly,  Michelle cheered us up," Break a leg!"
we had a wonderful time in performing dramas of our own. The two plays were " How the beaver got its flat tail?" and " How the rabbit got its red eyes?"  We made up the whole story, did some rehearsals, even made several props for ourselves and brought some costumes(?). Some had to dance on the stage and others had to cry out loud. The most difficult thing was to control our burst into laughter so as not to disturb the acting. All of the stress was relieved  when  Michelle said to us, " I have never seen such a wonderful performance and  energetic participation before." I think we cannot forget our happy moment with our great performance!

journal 10: Triple Punch

Monday April 7th

Three funny things happened one at a time today. It felt like punches in our head. To our frustration, my classmates and I could not defend our own point of view effectively. How sorry we felt for our poor English.
The first punch was thrown at us in Rob's class. We happened to discuss Dok-do. He implied that we Koreans seemed to be rather emotional about the issue than necessary. We admitted it but still we wanted to prove that Dok-do is ours. But Explaining all those things in English was a big challenge. The long controversy got a happy ending with his remark, "Yes, Dok-do belongs to Korea, of course." We all smiled happily.
In Noel's class, he played a  joke  that our classroom looked like a ghetto because of a few sheets of calendar attached on the glasswall.  I didn't attach them on the painted wall in order not to peel off the paint on the wall. Though we were surprised at it at first, we admitted it could look like that. That was the second punch.
The third punch was thrown in Brad's class. In the middle of talking about the particular food to  eat when we got ill, Karen said that overcooked rice porridge(=누룽지죽) was really good for a cold and tasted great. When we heard that, all of my classmates automatically imagined its nutsy smell and good taste. When Brad frankly said  it had only a burn taste plus water from his experience, we were all stunned.
Even though I compared  those happenings to  triple punch, we, in fact, liked their honest response because it meant we and the native professors felt more and more friendly and comfortable.

journal 9: Presentation of VARK

Friday April 4th

In Denis's class, each of the classmates  made presentations based on VARK. It was our first presentation, so we were somewhat nervous. But we did it successfully. At the end of class, Denis gave us a feedback.  We had good time and learned some from it.

journal 8:word up

Wednesday April 2nd
In ER  class, our fabulous actor Noel taught us how to play ' word up' game. It was fun. The way how to play it is as follows. I have to answer a proper word after listening to the question. The questions are divided into 4 categories: missing word, crossword, multiple choices, and spelling. If I make a correct  answer, I am given a chip. I have to collect four colored chips equally, not to mention many chips. I should be alert because  this  game has tricks and traps, too. Karen and April  came up with a few good  ideas to apply it to our school class. What nice teachers they are!

journal 7: April Fools' Day

Tuesday  April 1st

April Fools' Day! Now the time has come! My classmates and I really want to feel the same joy of playing jokes on our "teachers" as the "students" do.  We all agreed to become  " authentic students".
At the first period,  all of us quickly walked out of the classroom and waited for Jeff at the cafe downstairs with the messages written on the whiteboard at the empty room. It said, " Please look for us downstairs."
When we saw his smiling face at the cafe, we were laughing togethr just like mischievous students. We ,including Jeff, had a joyful time talking over coffee.
